cover of nyt article "the story you've been told about recycling is a lie" by Alexander Clapp

NYT Magazine Recycling is a Lie

For the Illustration class, we were tasked with creating a cover and magazine spread using physical photo transfer methods (like acetone transfer) to create imagery related to the article of our choosing.

The article I chose to represent for this project is "The Story You've Been Told About Recycling Is a Lie," which discusses the way Western countries are essentially dumping their trash, even recycled, in countries in the East. I used an acetone transfer of printed photos of people affected by toxic waste and garbage in their countries to create a faded, worn-away effect, which represents how they are not represented well in the media.
